This hesitation reveals more about human psychology than technological reality.

Consider this: employee fraud costs US businesses approximately $50 billion annually[1]. We've normalized this massive risk as the "cost of doing business." We implement controls, conduct audits, and accept that some percentage of human actors will act against organizational interests.
Yet when discussing AI systems—which operate more deterministically, leave complete audit trails, and can be monitored in real-time—we suddenly demand perfect trustworthiness.
The irony is stark. We trust humans despite knowing they will cost us $50 billion per year. But we distrust AI agents that could be instrumented, versioned, and rolled back at will.
The Credit Card Precedent
Remember when putting your credit card number on the internet seemed insane? In the mid-1990s, the idea of transmitting financial information over public networks triggered widespread skepticism. Security experts warned of catastrophic risks. Consumers refused to shop online.
Today, e-commerce generates between $0.5 and $1 trillion in annual sales[2]. The "risky" technology we feared became the backbone of modern commerce.
What changed wasn't the fundamental risk—internet transactions are still vulnerable to interception, fraud, and theft. What changed was our collective understanding that:

- Benefits outweigh costs (convenience, selection, price competition)
- Systems improve through deployment (learning from real-world usage)

Every technology carries risk:

- Open source dependencies can introduce vulnerabilities
- Third-party APIs can change without notice
- Human developers make mistakes, miss deadlines, and quit unexpectedly
The relevant question isn't "Is this risky?" but rather "How does this risk compare to alternatives, and can we manage it?"
Technology Evolves—Keep Up or Hang Back
Organizations face a choice: emrbrace AI agents now, learning to deploy them effectively while they're still emerging, or wait until competitors have already captured the advantage.
The companies that learned to trust online payments in 1998 didn't just survive the dot-com crash—they defined the next two decades of retail. The teams that adopt AI coding tools in 2026 won't just ship faster; they'll fundamentally rethink what's possible in software development.
And I don't mean using Copilot to refactor a function. I mean letting the AI do 100% of the coding under the guidance of developers with good logic and problem solving (human) skills.
This doesn't mean reckless adoption. It means thoughtful deployment:
- Start with bounded contexts (testing, documentation, refactoring)
- Instrument everything (logs, metrics, audit trails)
- Build confidence through small wins
- Scale what works, kill what doesn't
The Real Risk
The greatest risk isn't deploying AI agents that might occasionally fail. It's maintaining organizational inertia while the world speeds up around you.
We've seen this movie before. The credit card skeptics weren't wrong about the risks—they were wrong about what mattered. The risks were real, but manageable. The benefits were transformative.
